At Water’s Edge looks into unexplored corners of ambient electronica to uncover beauty in unexpected places. Music is everywhere–sometimes pretty, sometimes dark, always beautiful. awe.fm

Music is everywhere, in everything: in the hum of a city,
in the pulse of construction machinery or a heartbeat,
in footsteps, in laughter, in breath, in the shuffling of an impatient audience…
and, like John Cage’s “Four minutes and thirty-three seconds”,
all you have to do is sit and listen.

Map of the Human Soul

It turns out to be Astronomy Day today, and the timing is perfect -- this edition of At Water's Edge features maps, playing cards, and star charts.

Joe Frawley is StillStream's Featured Artist this month, and recently he released a fascinating album called Cartomancer. We will be rolling that in its entirety and sharing his notes about how the project came about.

We'll also hear a sampling of tracks from Steve Roach, Rigel Orionis, K.M. Krebs, Tom Caufield, intro, Gregory Taylor, konntinent, Erik Wøllo, and Alpha Wave Movement.

Throughout recorded history, and before (if the various cave illustrations are any indication), the human soul has been on a quest for meaning. We ascribe great portent to natural phenomena, we constantly ask "why", we explore, we discover, we risk, we hope, we dream. And although the details have changed over time, the quest remains, our restless souls never content to remain still.

We turn to the gods, or magic, miracles, science, the arts, seeking meaning from within and without; these are our chosen tools, but even when we think we know the answer, we continue seeking for deeper meaning, or different meaning if the answer doesn't satisfy us (and we are rarely satisfied for long). Because something in us knows that we lack the capacity to know it all, and that there is more, we become greedy for more meaning, greater understanding, new discoveries, better answers.

In the age in which we now live, we struggle for meaning in our individual lives, seeking to answer deep questions with possessions or politics, straying farther and farther from the path our natural soul once took.
