Hertz So Good
StillStream's featured release this month is End of the Steam Age by Christian Fiesel and Jack Hertz. And because we've wanted for quite some time to feature Jack's work on this program, we decided that this week was the right time to do it.
So on this week's edition of At Water's Edge, we feature works by Jack Hertz as well as collaborations between Jack and other artists. We'll also feature his photography on the video side. Jack, who is also the brains behind the Aural Films label, has provided amazing photography for the Fog Music series there; we'll feature those images and others.
"Starfish" - Jack Hertz - Complex Silence 34 (2013)
Complex Silence 34 is a study of a slow-moving life form that could be the mascot for everything that exemplifies ambient music. It occupies a patient space all its own in a deep universe without any consideration of time and Hertz captures this essence perfectly.
"...this album was inspired by the starfish that populate the Pacific coast where I live. The beautiful creatures move in a nearly imperceptible way along the ocean floor. They are such peaceful and elegant beings that I wanted to create some music that reflected their solemn place in nature."
"Linda Mar" - Jack Hertz - Pacifica (2014)
One of four long-form soundscapes inspired by the coastal landscapes around Pacifica, California. When you visit the Bandcamp page, be sure to click through to each of the track pages for details on the place the track was composed for, and do donate to help Trees for the Future!
"Pacifica Perfume" - Jack Hertz and rizorkestra - COAST (2015)
COAST is a word with two meanings. It is a place where the land meets the water, or something that is propelled without effort.
This music draws from both meanings, reflecting on sunlit waters, and the easy going life on the Pacific coast.

Christian Fiesel & Jack Hertz - End of the Steam Age (2016)
"Train to Sometimes"
"To Whom Space Was No Limit"
"End of the Steam Age"
"Drifting on Steam"
By 1915, the familiar whistle cry and billowing smoke of the locomotive had come to the end of the line when a world powered by stream gave way to quiet, clean electricity. Visions of these great mechanical marvels lost in time are the canvas for this new album by Christian Fiesel and Jack Hertz. Driven by steam, the artists ride into the past when the technology of combining heat and water powered commerce, industry and innovation.
